Research summary
Chronic liver disease is the fifth largest killer in the UK, and often only becomes symptomatic once the disease has progressed to cirrhosis. Existing tests for early stage liver disease rely on biopsy (painful and invasive for the patient) or an existing blood test - 'ELF'. This study will develop a new test, based on fluorescent nanomaterials, for testing patient serum and fingerprinting markers of liver disease for rapid and effective diagnosis. In this investigation we will explore the blood markers of liver disease and hope to create a point-of-care diagnostic tool.
