  • Data collection arrangements

We propose to expand our single centre (University Hospital Southampton - UHS) prospectively maintained database/ data bio-resource, with the aim of consolidating and centralising routinely collected clinically available data. This database is a prospectively maintained bio-resource utilised for data analyses and interrogation of clinically available data in various patient cohorts with the primary aim to inform and enhance perioperative patient care at UHS. This work is an expansion of a previous project (the Inception Cohort Database) to link data collected routinely by the Perioperative Medicine Hub around the time of surgery.

  • Research programme

This work supports patients having major surgery. By better understanding how patients prepare for surgery, what changes can be made to improve fitness (mental, physical, nutritional, motivational, etc) prior to surgery and how these affect outcomes following surgery. Outcomes may include time in hospital after surgery, complications after surgery, time to recovery, long-term quality of life and mortality. It will also look at decision-making around surgery and how patients are supported in their decisions about surgery and other related treatments.
