Research summary
As people age they often suffer from frailty and falls. Frailty is a syndrome often associated, but not limited to, ageing, and leaves people at risk of poor health outcomes, often from minor events such as new medications or minor infections. Falls can cause minor or serious injuries and lead to a fear of falls and social isolation.
To help manage patients suffering from frailty and falls, North East Ambulance Service have developed a rapid response falls service (FRRS), designed to treat patients in their home and avoid hospital. It is important for healthcare providers to understand how services like these meet the needs of patients. This can be done by understanding how patients live day to day with frailty and falls and what their needs are.
The purpose of this research is to explore what it is like to live with frailty and falls. This will help us understand patient needs and enable us to design and deliver better services.Eligible participants are aged ≥65, have a frailty score 4-7 and have mental capacity.
Potential participants will be 1)identified by the clinical team on the FRRS, 2)given an information sheet explaining the study further, and 3) give verbal consent to receive a telephone call from the research team, who will contact potential participants after at least 48hrs after their contact with the FRRS. Patients wishing to participate will provide written informed consent and will be interviewed face to face (or by telephone to accommodate Covid rules or participant preference).
Participants will be interviewed only once, interviews will last no more than 40 minutes and will be audio recorded. Participants can have family/friends present at the interview.
