Research summary
Qualitative pilot research will be undertaken concurrently with service-users at inpatient (St Andrew’s Healthcare) and community (Cyrenias supported accommodation) forensic mental health care settings to explore how forensic service-users make meaning of their sexuality, and how services shape service-users’ emotional and sexual relationships, with subsequent impacts on feelings of vitality and recovery. Identification of clinical and ward practice that prevents or degrades service-users’ experiences of sexuality and intimacy, as well as examples of good practice, are needed to serve as the basis for revised policy. The project will use ‘multimodal’ interviews that draw upon metaphor, imagery and embodied sensation to explore the subtlety and depth of the lived experience. Specifically, this study will employ visual methods such as drawing and modeling as part of a guided semi-structured interview
