Research summary
The study will assess the feasibility for children aged 8-12 years to learn how to control their brain activity and ‘teach’ themselves to maintain a relaxed brain state of over a relatively short period of time (a 30 minute period, once or twice a week).
Previous studies have shown that this relaxation training, also referred to as biofeedback, can be used to reduce the amount of electrical brain abnormalities and hence be used as a alternative treatment for some epileptic conditions. We plan to evaluate this potential in children with Benign Childhood Epilepsy with Centro-Temporal Spikes (BCECTS), by measuring whether learned changes in brain rhythms are associated with a reduced frequency of electrical abnormalities.
