  • Research summary

The Cognishine programme is a digital platform that aids rehabilitation of patients by facilitating speech, cognitive, and psychological rehabilitation. It has the potential to overcome many of the limitations that conventional rehabilitation comprises by providing personalised exercises. Preliminary results indicate the use of novel web-based techniques increase patient motivation and engagement to perform exercises more regularly, whilst simultaneously providing immediate feedback to both the patient and therapy provider.

Intervention with the Cognishine platform will be provided by trained professionals during the hospital stay and ends with hospital discharge. Standard of care will continue until discharge from stroke early supported discharge team. We aim to recruit 80 patients: 30 patients from intensive care at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, and 50 inpatients at the acute stroke unit at Aintree University Hospital, over 12 months.

The primary objective is to assess the feasibility of using a web-based platform for rehabilitation within a large NHS Trust to understand screening, recruitment, adherence and retention rates fora follow up definite trial. In addition we will determine the number of completed therapy sessions, per patient days. SAs secondary objective, we aim to generate preliminary data on the rehabilitation progress with the use of the Cognishine platform, using standard clinical tools for assessment of cognitive, speech, and language dysfunction. We will also assess staff and patient experience of using the Cognishine platform during therapy sessions. This feasibility study will help to inform optimisation and uptake of the Cognishine platform for use in the wider NHS setting.
