Research summary
The prospective study will aim to develop and evaluate a 12-session online Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) intervention for children and young people (CYP) aged 14-18 with a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). Children and young people with T1D often report increased levels of diabetes related stigma, which can act as a precursor to difficulties such as self-criticism, shame and self-blame. Similarly, diabetes distress can often lead to burnout and poor self-management which can have negative ramifications on health. With this in mind, teaching self-compassion may be a strong conceptual fit for working with T1D in children and young people. The current study aims to design a novel intervention that could be accessed online via video and viewed at the discretion of the participant in their own home. This CFT based intervention will be compared to a wait list control group. Forty to sixty participants will be recruited for the study, each of whom have a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes. Participants will be recruited from an NHS Paediatrics Diabetes services based in Brighton, Sussex who will support with the project. Participants will access videos online over the course of 23 days which included a combination of psychoeducation on the core tenets of CFT, imagery exercises, compassionate letter writing and a plan moving beyond the study. The study will aim to assess the feasibility and suitability and rates of retention of a digital CFT approach with the client population, with secondary aims of increasing levels of self-compassion, reduce diabetes related distress and increase motivation to self-manage.
