  • Research summary

Somatic flashbacks are acknowledged anecdotally amongst practitioners, but no empirical research exists which explores how to manage this symptom. Re-experiencing symptoms are a core component to Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research which aims to increase our understanding of the management of somatic flashbacks is needed to ensure clinical practice can be informed by the evidence base.

The main purpose of this trial to explore if an intervention which features imagery rescripting (ImRs) is acceptable and feasible in the management of somatic flashbacks in PTSD.

A single group longitudinal feasibility design will be used in this project to measure eligibility rates, rates of recruitment, acceptability of the intervention (completion rates, potential adverse effects measured by changes in symptoms), and adherence to the treatment protocol. Secondary objectives will explore any differences in symptoms following the intervention.

Participants will be identified from a pool of participants accessing two specialist trauma services in London (Traumatic Stress Clinic and Woodfield Trauma Service). Those who provide consent will take part in the intervention whilst on the waiting list for routine treatment.

Findings from the trial will lead to an improved understanding of whether the intervention could make a feasible intervention for the symptom of somatic flashbacks.
