  • Research summary

The study aims to better understand the effect of prematurity on fathers and what the long-term implications of any effects may be. This project will examine the effect of parents’ relationship quality and paternal involvement on child outcomes following premature deliveries. In particular, we plan to examine the role of medical characteristics at birth (for example, gestational age, birthweight and duration of initial hospitalization) on the fathers’ involvement, and on the quality of the relationship between the mother and father. Furthermore, we plan to examine the long-term implications of this involvement and relationship quality for child outcomes such as child behavior problems, teacher assessments, and the quality of the child-parent relationship. We will also control for many potential confounding variables, such as socioeconomic status. This study will use the data collected as part of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study given the wealth of information collected from mothers and fathers from the birth of their child into childhood. This dataset was collected in the United States by Princeton University and Columbia University.
