Research summary
BACKGROUND
Around a third of stroke survivors have aphasia, a communication disability that affects speaking, understanding, reading and writing.
Post-pandemic, there is high demand for aphasia therapy.
Speech therapy services must adapt and use different ways of seeing people, to meet the high demand. One way to do this is to offer online therapy, as well as usual therapy.
Online therapy has many benefits. It may be easier for those who find it hard to leave the house. However, there are also challenges we need to address.AIMS
1. Find out about the challenges of online speech therapy for people with aphasia and what helps. We will focus on carrying out assessments online, which have special demands and determine what to do in therapy.
2. See how online assessments compare with usual/face-to-face assessments. This will help speech therapists interpret online assessments accurately.
3. Develop resources and training for speech therapists. This will help them carry out online assessment and therapy efficiently. It will improve access to therapy for patients and their online experience.THE PROJECT
We have already run workshops, a survey, and computer testing to help us prepare.
Phase 1: we will explore what we have learnt from our preparation work and develop resources and training on online assessment.
Phase 2: we will assess 100 people with aphasia both online and face-to-face on the same assessments. We will evaluate how their scores compare. We will use assessments that target outcomes important to people with aphasia: communication, well-being, quality of life.
Phase 3: we will work closely with our project advisory group (people with aphasia and family members). We will finalise the resources and training. We will make them freely available online. We will share them widely, e.g., through professional networks and social media.REC name
