Research summary
Our research focuses on understanding human fat tissue function, in order to develop new treatments for obesity and diabetes. For this purpose, we study human fat cells (adipose tissue) by growing and keeping them in cell culture in the laboratory. However, fat cells survive in culture only for a limited period of time (a couple of weeks), and they do not grow indefinitely. As such, our research is dependent on a steady supply of human fat tissue. In this project we wish to collect tissue from healthy volunteers by means of taking a tissue sample (biopsy), as well as by collecting tissue from plastic surgery procedures (e.g. liposuction). The tissues will be transferred to our laboratory and used for our research. Apart from age, gender, body mass index (BMI, a measure of obesity) and site of tissue removal (e.g. abdomen or leg), no other data will be collected from the donors.
