Research summary
Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are of critical global relevance especially given the current COVID-19 pandemic. RTI incidence is globally high and we don’t fully understand why some people become sick, leading to hospitalization, after encountering a virus or bacteria whilst others do not. Continuous monitoring of the upper respiratory tract (URT) flora in health and disease could improve our understanding and future diagnostic and treatment capability for RTIs. Current monitoring sampling methods cause pain and discomfort. This research will optimise minimally invasive sampling aimed at understanding the role of the microbiota in RTIs.
