Research summary
The principal research aim is to determine whether family factors (expressed emotion [critical comments, emotional over-involvement, low warmth], accommodation to anxiety symptoms) are associated with traumatic stress reactions in young people following a single-incident, potentially traumatic event that required an admission to the Emergency Department at King’s College Hospital. Outcomes are symptoms of Acute Stress Disorder (ASD), Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Depression in young people. The young person and a caregiver will be asked to complete measures of family functioning and symptomatology 2-4 weeks and 6 months after the event. The relationship between family factors and outcomes will be examined cross-sectionally and longitudinally. The findings of the study may provide areas for targeted early intervention of psychological problems that can cause significant distress and impairment in young people.
