Research summary
This study aims to explore what it is like living with a child who has a chronic illness and the effects this has on the whole family. The aim is to explore whether family - centred care really exists in the clinical setting, from the family and health care professionals perspectives.
According to Whittaker (2004) the concept of family–centred care has been explored in previous research studies that have examined the experiences of individual family members as opposed to addressing the issues from the perspective of the nuclear family as a unit. There appears to be a gap in the literature in regard to formalising the role that nurses and midwives have in caring for both the patient and their immediate family. Unlike previous studies which have focussed on the experience of parents who stayed with their child in hospital, this study will adopt a broader perspective and explore the impact chronic illness has on the nuclear family. This study will look at the social, emotional, psychological and financial challenges that are experienced by families with chronically ill children.
A case study approach will be utilised exploring the views of both family and health professionals using multi methods of data collection.REC name
