Research summary
This is a qualitative phenomenological study investigating the lived experience of the relatives of patients on Phase I oncology trials within a clinical trials unit. Families attending the phase I unit will be asked to participate in a one hour interview to explore their experiences of being the relative of someone treated on a phase I trial. Historically these trials have little chance of therapeutic benefit and a high burden in terms of hospital visits and tests for the patient, patients often bring a significant other or relative to the visit and they are often involved in the decison making process. The aim of the project is to describe the lived experience of the relative of the patient on a phase I trial within the DDU.
The objectives of the study are as follow: To investigate the experience of the relative taking into account any possible burden, benefit or psychological impact, to identify any common themes that may emerge as a result of the data collection,to provide descriptive information of the experience in relation to the current level of support/intervention from health care professionals,to identify any need for further intervention or support for relatives, this may initially require further investigation. The interviews will be transcribed verbatim and analysed using Colaizzi (1978) framework for qualitative data.REC name
