Research summary
In this project we plan to interview patients, their partners and their healthcare professionals to understand what opportunities there are to improve sharing and understanding relevant information, preparing women to make their preconception choices, and what opportunities there are to implement preconception co-production practices. It is important to understand the current experiences of patients, their partners and staff in order to create something which is helpful to the co-production process and feasible to implement in the different settings women seek and receive healthcare support. Each party experiences the healthcare consultations differently.
The results of these interviews will be integral to the co-designing of an intervention that will enable women of reproductive age who have inflammatory arthritis to co-produce their health. The intervention developed from these interviews will be co-designed with a stakeholder group of healthcare providers from different settings, researchers, and most importantly, lay members from this patient population. The aim of the intervention will be to provide women with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to share decisions with their health professionals about the management of their disease and family planning. The project will also look at organisational level processes, important for providing an environment and culture that is conducive to sharing decisions and co-creating health. The intervention will be designed within at least three different services so that applicability of the approach and considerations for wider implementation across a range of services can be considered from the outset. The project will involve development of a logic model of the co-production intervention, including proposed mechanisms, activities, resources and outcomes. This can later be used when considering the applicability of the intervention to other service contexts (e.g. primary care, family planning clinics), and for different LTLIs that affect women of reproductive age (e.g. epilepsy, asthma, and Type 1 diabetes).
