Research summary
Faecal Calprotectin analysis is performed on patient stool samples to aid clinical decisions when referring patients for colonoscopy. High faecal Calprotectin concentrations suggest irritable bowel disease (IBD) and therefore the patient is referred for colonoscopy for differential diagnosis. Previous research has suggested that FC concentrations vary, between different stool samples shed on different days and within individual stool samples. In order to explore this test further and to help service development this study aims to investigate the day to day variability of faecal Calprotectin levels within healthy volunteers and also to determine any within stool variation in calprotectin concentrations.
