Research summary
The aim of this research is to interview people that have a history of sexual offending behaviours and are diagnosed with a borderline intellectual disability or intellectual disability (an IQ of 80 or less) living in the community in order to determine what aspects of their care and treatment is preventing them from re-committing sexual offences. This could involve residential settings, care homes or living in their own homes. Front line staff that support these individuals will also be interviewed in order to obtain their perspective on what they feel has helped this client group from re-offending in the community. Once consent has been obtained from all participants, interviews will commence with both groups (sex offenders with an intellectual disability and frontline staff). All interviews will be digitally recorded and then transcribed by the lead researcher. The answers given by participants will then be analysed using grounded theory approach. This involves identifying any themes and patterns within the answers obtained until ‘saturation’ is achieved. This is when no further new information can be sought from the participants’ answers. Once this is attained, a theory is developed to explain any relationships found in order to understand the research question set out.
