Research summary
It is widely acknowledged that oral disease reduces quality of life and has multiple impacts on physical and psychological wellbeing. Children living in the most deprived electoral wards in Northern Ireland (SureStart areas) are almost twice as likely to experience dental decay as those living in more affluent areas (Department of Health Social Services & Public Safety, 2007).
This is a qualitative study using a purposive sample of parents (of children age 0-4 years) living within an area of social deprivation (SureStart area).
