  • Data collection arrangements

Volunteers are invited to take part in the Exeter 10,000 study. Following consent, they undergo routine clinical assessments, medical history questionnaires and biofluid collection (blood and urine). As part of the consent, participants are asked to gift their samples and data to the Peninsula Research Bank so that they can be stored and used in future research, and whether they are happy to be contacted about future research studies. Researchers can apply to the Peninsula Research Bank Steering Committee to access these samples (stored urine and blood samples and its subfractions including genetic material), data or volunteers. Optional collection of buccal, nasal, hair and stool samples.

The samples are currently stored in the RILD Building Freezer Store, DNA Extraction Laboratory and NIHR Exeter Clinical Research Facility Sample Room. The RILD Building is on the RD&E Hospital Site at Barrack Road. Samples are held in -20 freezers for up to 2 weeks and then transferred to -80 freezers. All freezers are monitored using a monitoring system to ensure that long term storage does no rise above minus 60 degrees. Data is held within the Exeter Clinical Research Facility Office at the same address on secure servers and in locked offices.

  • Research programme

The Exeter 10,000 and Peninsula Research Bank supports healthcare research but its priority use will be for experimental medicine into the mechanism of common diseases (for example diabetes, dementia and heart disease) and healthy aging. It is open to applications from local researchers but also to applications from collaborators from elsewhere. It provides a central resource and gateway in Exeter to manage volunteer samples and research participation and is managed with significant lay representative involvement. Research supported includes small pilot investigations through to international projects. All uses of samples must be approved by scientific and lay members of the steering committee
