Research summary
Many people do not receive a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) until adulthood, some of whom have families of their own. Research into the experiences of parents with ASD is limited and fathers are particularly underrepresented in the literature. The limited research regarding this population suggests that fathers with ASD may experience challenges associated with parenting, however there is little exploration as to why this is the case. This research project aims to explore the parenting experiences of fathers with ASD.
Eight to ten fathers with a formal diagnosis of ASD will be recruited from NHS services and third sector organisations. Semi-structured interviews will explore their experiences of parenting and their relationship with their child(ren). A qualitative methodology will be used to analyse the data.
A qualitative account will enable a richer understanding of the experiences of the fathers who take part in the study, and hopefully in turn provide information on how to support individuals with similar needs.
