Research summary
This study will explore the experiences of children and young people attending service development forums at Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) within Five Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. The Trust has developed a network of forums across their five CAMHS teams in order to hear the views of previous and current service users of any age regarding service delivery. The involvement of service users within service development is an important process that ensures that services are delivering what their target population requires. In addition, previous research and reports have found benefits for young people involved in service development to include increasing their skills and confidence, enabling them to meet new people, and providing new experiences and opportunities.
This will be the first study to explore the impact of the Trust’s forums for attendees. During the study one to one interviews lasting a maximum of one hour will be conducted face to face with approximately 12 children and young people. Interview transcripts will be analysed using thematic analysis in order to identify patterns across data highlighting what is important to the attendees.
The findings of this study will draw attention to the impact of service development forums, including the benefits and drawbacks for attendees, will highlight what works well and what does not during the running of such forums, and will help to inform the future development of forums. The study will also highlight the importance of child and young service users being involved in service development in line with international and national agendas.
