  • Research summary

This study will use semi-structured interviews and questionnaires related to wellbeing to gain greater understanding into the experiences of cochlear implant users and their families. It is recognised that the experience of losing hearing, having surgery and rehabilitation is difficult for the individual, but not much is known about how it effects the family who support them, and how they cope with the changes that they too, experience. It is hoped that by identifying any issues particular to this population, or any positive coping strategies that are employed, tailored psychological support could be developed in the future, should this be shown to be required. Participants will be recruited from an auditory implant service using posters, flyers, and word of mouth. Eligible participants will be:
    Over the age of eighteen
Fluent English or British Sign Language speakers (a translator will be provided)
Users of a cochlear implant of six months or more
Or family members (in the same household) of cochlear implant users
Cognitively able to consent to research.
Participants will be asked to fill in two or three questionnaires and take part in a semi-structured interview lasting no longer than one hour. This interview will be audio recorded for transcription. The transcripts will be analysed for themes and written up in a thesis.
Participants will be paid £30 for their time and any travel expenses will be reimbursed at a rate of 45 pence per mile.
