Research summary
Title of research: Exploring the experience of people receiving psychological therapy for a long-term health condition in primary care: A phenomenological study.
This study aims to explore the meaning of being seen by a mental health practitioner in an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service for difficulties originating in a long-term physical health problem, including persistent physical symptoms (PPS) also known as medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) and to help sense-making of participants’ journeys and experiences with their physical health problem that has meant they have been treated by a psychological therapies practitioner.
The following is the inclusion criteria for people eligible to participate:
Has at least one long-term physical health condition or medically persistent physical symptoms, also known as medically unexplained symptoms;
Is at least 18 years old;
Has been seen within an Improving Access to Psychological Therapy service for emotional difficulties associated with a long-term physical health condition;
At the time of interview, is no longer being seen by Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) service or any other mental health service;
Has completed at least 4 sessions of an Improving Access to Psychological Therapy service intervention.Participants will have at least one and no more than two interviews and last approximately one hour. They will occur at a place of the participant's choosing including in their own home or they can come to my office at Leigh Infirmary. I also have access to multiple community clinic rooms located in community resource centres. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic the interviews may also be able to take place over an agreed online platform such as Zoom or Skype.
