  • Research summary

    Title of research: Exploring the experience of people receiving psychological therapy for a long-term health condition in primary care: A phenomenological study.

    This study aims to explore the meaning of being seen by a mental health practitioner in an Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) service for difficulties originating in a long-term physical health problem, including persistent physical symptoms (PPS) also known as medically unexplained symptoms (MUS) and to help sense-making of participants’ journeys and experiences with their physical health problem that has meant they have been treated by a psychological therapies practitioner.

    The following is the inclusion criteria for people eligible to participate:
    Has at least one long-term physical health condition or medically persistent physical symptoms, also known as medically unexplained symptoms;
    Is at least 18 years old;
    Has been seen within an Improving Access to Psychological Therapy service for emotional difficulties associated with a long-term physical health condition;
    At the time of interview, is no longer being seen by Improving Access to Psychological Therapy (IAPT) service or any other mental health service;
    Has completed at least 4 sessions of an Improving Access to Psychological Therapy service intervention.

    Participants will have at least one and no more than two interviews and last approximately one hour. They will occur at a place of the participant's choosing including in their own home or they can come to my office at Leigh Infirmary. I also have access to multiple community clinic rooms located in community resource centres. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic the interviews may also be able to take place over an agreed online platform such as Zoom or Skype.
