Research summary
This study will look at the experiences of young people who identify as LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or use other language to describe sexual/gender minority identity) disclosing this identity within CAMHS (Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services), and the impact of this disclosure. Distress, suicidality and self-harm are high in this population, yet limited research has specifically looked at disclosure of LGBTQ+ identities with mental health settings. Specifically, the study will focus on young people who have experienced self-harm or suicidal ideation, recognising the high prevalence within LGBTQ+ populations and the potential for additional stigmatisation relating to this aspect of identity too. A qualitative approach using 1:1 interviews will be used to establish salient themes regarding the experience and impact of disclosure of LGBTQ+ identities in CAMHS. This will be analysed using Thematic Analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). It is hoped the findings will increase clinical understandings of young people’s identity disclosure experiences within CAMHS, and promote development of services that can better meet their needs.
