  • Research summary

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a long term condition that involves inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, which is the organ responsible for consuming and digesting foodstuffs, absorbing nutrients and expelling waste. Medications can be effective in the treatment of IBD however, a large proportion of people do not respond to medication and stoma surgery has to be considered to remove an inflamed section of the gastrointestinal tract.
IBD is highly prevalent in adolescents, which is a significant stage in a person’s life with regard to self-esteem and body image and the possibility of surgery can be particularly problematic and distressing. Research has found that adolescents can delay stoma surgery due to the negative impact that it could have on their lives. However, delaying surgery could be more detrimental to the adolescent’s health and quality of life. There is limited literature available in the preoperative process that adolescents go through before surgery which makes it difficult to understand how professionals can help during this time.
This qualitative study wants to interview adolescents who have had to consider stoma surgery and what their experience was like in making a decision. This study aims to explore factors that adolescents consider when making a decision and it is hoped that the findings will go towards helping staff to support adolescents during this decision making process. Recruitment will take place at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (RHSC) in Glasgow.
