Research summary
This PhD mixed methods research study is being undertaken through Swansea University and aims to contribute to developing an understanding of what professional judgement means to senior nurses and how this influences their decision-making. Understanding how professional judgement can be developed to positively influence decision making with workforce management would provide more understanding of the development and training needs of our future workforce and senior nurses of the future. Defining and being able to clearly articulate what professional judgement in practice means will help empower our senior nurses to influence policies and the planning models required to secure our future district nursing workforce.
The research will be undertaken in three phases and this ethical application relates to the first phase which will be the use of online focus groups using MS Teams with three groups of nursing professionals (executive directors nursing, community heads of nursing and district nurse team leaders from NHS Organisations across Wales). Subsequent ethical applications will be made at a later date for phases two and three
Main objectives of focus groups
• Explore understanding from the experiences and perspectives of participants how professional judgements are developed and used.
• Explore factors which may influence their application of professional judgements and how senior nurses balance operational, organisational and professional roles and responsibilities. The outcomes of the focus group will determine both the design and content of subsequent questionnaires and qualitative in-depth formal interviews.
Participation in this focus group will be entirely voluntary and participants can withdraw from the study at any time up until the analysis of data has been completed without giving a reason. All information related to participant and the rights of the participants will be clearly explained in both the consent form and participant information sheet
