Research summary
This research aims to determine whether nurses are using supportive and end-of-life care assessment tools in the acute hospital setting and to explore nurses’ perceptions of one assessment tool to assess the supportive and end-of-life care needs of patients in clinical practice settings. The ICECAP-Supportive Care Measure (ICECAP-SCM) will be used in the proposed research, exploring the ways in which this measure could be used to assist registered nurses assess patients’ supportive and end-of-life care needs, and whether measures developed for research purposes could have clinical applications, particularly on admission to an acute hospital ward. Registered nurses who frequently work with, and admit patients with supportive and palliative care needs will be used in focus groups for this study. For this reason, registered nurses will be recruited from haematology, oncology and older adult clinical settings within one acute hospital. Three interviews with key stakeholders will also be conducted exploring how they perceive the tool could be used.
