Research summary
There is significant volume of literature around stalking of health professionals, however much of this focuses on prevalence rates of stalking and the experiences of victims. The present study will assess prevalence of stalking within mental health services in Greater Glasgow and Clyde through an online survey distributed to all staff with patient contact. The study also aims to go beyond a sole focus on staff experience by analysing case studies of patients who have stalked health professionals, to gain an increased understanding of the different types of stalkers and related risk factors. Through triangulating data from the staff survey and case study analysis we also aim to explore the relationship between diagnosis/perceived diagnosis and type of stalking behaviour, identify strategies adopted by staff to end stalking behaviour, and explore whether specific professional groups are more at risk of being stalked. Using this information, we aim to develop a strategy paper and guidance document advising staff on how to respond to harassment and stalking behaviours from patients.
