Research summary
This research will include ex-armed forces personnel that have a diagnosis of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and have perpetrated an act of domestic violence or abuse (DVA). There is a clear need for research in this area, particularly qualitative studies as there are none to date, which explore the lived experience of UK veterans suffering from PTSD who have engaged in DVA. It is hoped that a person-centred approach to addressing the relationship between veteran mental health and the motivation to perpetrate violence rather than to seek help will inform treatment needs, highlighting areas for intervention and prevention of domestic violence amongst military veterans.
The NHS Veterans Mental Health Transition, Intervention and Liaison (TIL) Service - London and South East has been identified for recruitment of participants. Male individuals, aged 18 years and older with a history of service in the Armed Forces, service-related PTSD, and a history of at least one act of domestic violence and abuse will be eligible to participate. Data will be collected through semi-structured interviews, lasting a maximum of 2 hours and will encompass questions about participants' experiences of military service, family life and perpetration of domestic violence and abuse. Approximately 6 veterans suffering from PTSD who have engaged in domestic violence and abuse will be interviewed. Interview transcripts will be analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.
