  • Research summary

This study will explore the experience of mothers with adult children with psychosis who have engaged in Family Intervention for Psychosis (FIP). The focus will be on mother as they are more likely to be carers and to engage in FIP.

The relationships with carers and family is an important mediator for clinical outcomes and recovery in psychosis. FIP has been shown to improve outcomes for people with psychosis and their families. This study aims to improve the understanding of how therapy works by exploring how mothers make sense of any perceived impact FIP had on themselves and their relationship with their children. Understanding what service users consider important in therapy is helpful for the development of clinical theory and practice, as well as training and supervision of therapists.

It will add to the understanding of why FIP might lead to better outcomes for patients and families. The study will also be an opportunity to explore FIP from the family member perspective, which so far has received little attention.

Participant will be recruited from two community NHS mental health services. Participants will have had at least 5 sessions of systemically informed family intervention. They will be interviewed once for about 1.5 hrs, using a semi-structure interview. They will be asked about their relationship with their children before and after therapy and their experience of engaging in FIP.

Interviews will take place through Microsoft Teams or face to face, either in a NHS location familiar to the participant or in their homes. Interviews will be recorded. Transcript will be analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which is qualitative approach that aims for a detailed examination of the lived experience of the participant as they understand it. All participants will be invited to give feedback about the analysis.
