Research summary
Patient and public involvement (PPI) is used increasingly in research, to enable lay perspectives to be integrated into all aspects of the research process. There are several methods which are used to facilitate PPI, but optimal methods and/ or tools for the collection of ’lay’ opinion are not universally established. Developing an increased understanding of the experience of PPI will support the collection of better contributions.\nThe literature describes issues with PPI during involvement activities and when reporting these activities. The limited scope of tools which have been developed to facilitate PPI, are not well represented in the literature.\nThe study gathers multiple perspectives and values from ’lay’ contributors and researchers. It is qualitative and will use Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). The experience and interpretation of the phenomena of PPI will be explored, using semi-structured interviews. \nThe findings will be used to generate themes to represent the views of ’lay’ contributors and researchers regarding PPI. This will improve understanding of different perspectives regarding experience, methods and outcomes from PPI activities. With greater understanding of appropriate methods and/ or tools, the identification of the most appropriate ones to elicit ’lay’ contributions during PPI activities will develop.\n
