  • Research summary

This research project is about understanding the perceptions and experiences of people with chronic pain (i.e. pain lasting at least 3 months) taking part in a 6-week online pain management group programme within Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust. Online groups have been a new experience for many people during the pandemic and it is important to understand the benefits and issues of helping people with their pain in an online group, rather than in a face-to-face group.
The study will involve interviews with up to 15 volunteers who have participated in the online pain management group programme, to ask them about their experiences of taking part. Volunteers will be asked how they experienced and felt about the online pain group programme, whether they found it helpful to support them to better manage their pain, as well as what they found less helpful or could be improved.
The interviews will be conducted using Microsoft Teams and will be recorded and transcribed using the Microsoft Teams software. The anonymised transcriptions will be analysed to look for key ideas or themes arising from the interviews.
The experiences people tell us about will be used to make changes to improve the online pain group programme. Other clinicians in Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust will be informed of the findings through presentations within the trust.
The Commissioning group (people who fund the online pain group programmes) will be informed of the findings through a presentation and a written report. Learning from service user experiences is important to help other people in the UK living with chronic pain, so these experiences will be written up as a published paper and will be presented at national conferences and meetings. We will also share our findings and recommendations with other NHS services, to help them to improve their services.
