Research summary
The role of physician associate (PA) is being increasingly adopted by the National Health Service (NHS). The PA role overlaps with that of junior doctors, especially those immediately after graduation undertaking Foundation Year (FY) training. There have been concerns within the medical community regarding the role of PAs and potential impacts on training for FY doctors. This study aims to explore how FY doctors perceive PAs in the NHS? Using focus groups made up of FY doctors in two NHS Trusts the study objectives are to explore views of FY doctors towards PAs, to identify barriers to effective interprofessional working between FY doctors and PAs and to identify positive aspects of interprofessional working between FY doctors and PAs. The focus group transcripts will be analysed using thematic analysis to draw out relevant themes. The results can then be used to improve training for both FY doctors and PAs which will, in turn, improve care provided for patients within the NHS.
