Research summary
Women frequently suffer from urinary problems, and one condition which is common is overactive bladder (OAB). OAB is a collection of symptoms including urgency to pass water, frequency of urination and sometimes incontinence (leakage). Treatment for OAB includes bladder retraining and tablet treatments.
Our research is to run some focus groups with women who have OAB to explore with them their experience of the urinary problem and to explore which symptom or symptoms are the most distressing and troublesome. We will run two groups with women in primary care and two with patients in the University Hospitals of Leicester continence service. We have already run two groups with women after advanced treatment, who have the most severe bladder problems, as part of another study, and so this project will allow us to compare and contrast the views of women with severe (previous work), moderate (hospital patients in this study), and mild (primary care patients in this study) symptoms.
Focus groups will be facilitated by the undergraduate and one supervisor, and will be tape recorded, transcribed and anonymised before analysis using qualitative methods to identify the most troublesome symptoms of OAB, and to compare the responses between women recruited from the different locations.REC name
