  • Research summary

COVID-19 has led to already socially vulnerable engaged problem gamblers spending more money and more time gambling online. Treatment services have needed to adapt to provide therapy since the onset of the pandemic. Qualitative research exploring experiences of problem gamblers receiving psychological treatment during COVID-19 is limited amidst calls to improve this. The current study aims to better understand the experiences of psychological treatment since the onset of COVID-19 for problem gamblers.

Adult individuals who have experienced psychological treatment for problem gambling during the pandemic will be invited to take part. Qualitative semi-structured interviews (n=8-10) will be used to capture complex individual experiences. Working age adults over the age of 18 years and under the age of 65 years, who identify as experiencing difficulties with gambling and who have also received psychological treatment for gambling will be eligible to take part. Participants, who have volunteered and consented to take part, will be invited to complete a 60 minute-90 minutes interview with the researcher to explore these areas. These interviews will be conducted remotely via a video platform such as Google Meet or via a telephone call. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) will be employed to help provide an in-depth understanding of these experiences and interpret themes arising from them. This is part of a project for a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology qualification, the study will run until November 2023.
