Research summary
The study will investigate the experiences and perspectives of patients who have received care in North East England for eye damage caused by an attack with corrosive acidic or alkali chemicals. Previous research has aimed to understand the motivations of perpetrators of acid attacks in the UK, but none has explored the experience of those who have eye injuries from chemical burns caused by an attack.
The principal aim of the study is to understand the experiences these patients have of their overall care, and thereby to identify opportunities to improve the holistic healthcare (i.e., both immediate and long term) that is offered to victims of acid burn attacks so that it more closely meet the needs of this population. The secondary aims are to understand the sociodemographic characteristics (e.g. age, education, marital status, employment status, gender) and socioeconomic circumstances (e.g. where they live, crime rates in that area, indices of multiple deprivation ranking) of victims to understand the social context within which services may be provided. We will also explore the viability of a patient support group.
