  • Research summary

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are identified as playing an important role in the provision of support to children and young people who experience mental health difficulties and their families (Bjorngaard, Andersson, Ose & Hanssen-Baur, 2008). Parents are increasingly recognised as being important participants in the delivery of care to their child (Gerkensmeyer & Austin, 2005) and their involvement is considered integral to the engagement and continuation of treatment for their child (Holmboe, Iversen & Hanssen-Bauer, 2011; Rey, Plapp & Simpson, 1999). As such, the views of parents’ have been increasingly sought, particularly when considering the quality of care being delivered within CAMH services (Garratt, Bjertnaes, Holmboe & Hanssen-Bauer, 2011).

A preliminary search of the literature base indicates that research has neglected to explore the individual experiences of parents accessing CAMHS. Therefore, the present study aims to explore the lived experiences of parents and carers whose children are accessing a CAMH service and if they have any support needs in relation to this.

A qualitative research design involving semi-structured interviews will be used to allow the researcher to develop insights into the experiences of parents and carers of children who are accessing a CAMH service. Participants will be recruited from three CAMHS teams across five sites (St. Helens & Knowsley, Warrington & Halton and Wigan) within the Five Boroughs Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust and invited to take part in an interview which will last approximately 1 hour.
