Research summary
This qualitative research study is to gain understanding the personal experience of parents engaging in Family Based Treatment (FBT) for their child’s eating disorder (ED). Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach will be employed. Recruiting a purposive sample of participants (N=8-10) who satisfy the following inclusion criteria: Adults (aged 18+), who are parents of a child aged between 12 and 19, who have completed at least 3 sessions of FBT for their child’s diagnosed or suspected eating disorder, who are able to conduct an interview in English. Children of participants must be aged 12-19 as this is the age group used in the evidence base for FBT (Dimitropoulos et al., 2015). Potential applications will be recruited primarily from an NHS Eating Disorders Service and third sector organisations such as FEAST. Participants will be asked to take part in a one-to-one interview lasting around 60-90 minutes, the findings will be transcribed and analysed in accordance with the IPA process defined by Smith et al. (2009). It is anticipated that the findings will help professionals provide targeting support for parents navigating treatment for their child’s eating disorder.
