Research summary
The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experience of registered nurses seeking support with caring for a person with dementia in an acute hospital setting. The study will take place in three acute non-mental health hospital, within the following departments; Emergency Departments, Older Adult Wards, Oncology, mental health liaison teams/specialist dementia teams. Registered nurses will attend one 40 - 45 minute focus group where all participants will be from the same department. There will be approx. 6-8 nurses per focus groups and a total of four focus groups at each acute non-mental health hospital.
The study will explore: the lived experience of registered nurses seeking support, the concept of support in context of caring for patient with dementia and the barriers and facilitators that hinder or aid the provision and uptake of support. The study will involve the collection of qualitative data on the registered nurses experiences. This approach provides an understanding of the processes, pathways and specialist roles and services in dementia care within acute hospitals from the registered nurses prospective.
