Research summary
There is a growing body of literature to support the use of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. The literature exploring the efficacy of DBT has largely looked at groups run in community settings, most frequently with women. There are very few qualitative evaluations of the therapy in secure services, and none have been completed using males in a high secure sample. This project seeks to explore the experiences of completing the DBT skills group in a high secure hospital. The high secure hospital to be used for this research currently evaluates the DBT programme using pre and post outcome measures, though it is not felt that the measures allow for the experiences and perspectives of the group members to be considered. This project is relevant to the field as Clinical Psychologists both devise and run such groups. This is a qualitative study using completed DBT groups as participants. Semi-structured interviews with approximately 8 individual DBT group members are to be completed. The transcripts will be analysed using Thematic Analysis.
