Research summary
Although many interventions for conduct problems have shown positive outcomes, the efficacy of these programmes is affected by high rates of dropout from treatment. The study aims to use a qualitative approach to understand the experience of young people and parents from families who have failed to engage with or dropped out early from FFT treatment in the Southwark and Bolton FFT clinics. The study will interview parents and adolescents from 24 families (12 treatment dropouts and 12 treatment completers). The enquiry will aim to gather families’ own experiences of the FFT referral, engagement and treatment process, and if relevant, their interpretation and reasons for why the treatment broke down. The study will also focus on specific areas highlighted by previous research to be related to treatment engagement and dropout including barriers to treatment, therapeutic alliance and home and clinic context as well as the proposed engagement and motivation processes of the FFT model. Interviews will be analysed using Thematic Analysis as outlined by Braun and Clarke (2013).
