  • Research summary

This 8-month study will aim to investigate the experiences of nurses in an emergency department when presented with patients who have experienced psychological trauma. These Registered Nurses will be from an Emergency department in North Wales.

There is previous literature in Emergency departments that deal with the impact of critical incidents on the wellbeing of nurses and how this impacts. However, there is limited knowledge on how nurses cope with specific incidents of psychological trauma, including aspects of self-harm and domestic violence.

This study will use a qualitative methodology using semi-structured interviews to develop a comprehensive understanding of nurses experiences of being presented with a patient with psychological trauma and the potential of secondary traumatic stress. The analysis of the answers will generate results exploring what emergency nurses psychologically and emotionally experience when presented with patients who are psychologically traumatised. In addition, the results may reveal specific issues related to becoming an emergency department nurse.
