Research summary
I am interested in young people's experiences of using a smart-inhaler, which they have been given by their healthcare provider to monitor whether they use their asthma inhaler as prescribed.
The smart-inhaler is a telehealth device that contains a micro that records the time/date of inhaler use. A healthcare provider can download the data remotely to help them gain a more accurate idea of inhaler use. it has been introduced into clinical practice in the paediatric asthma clinic at the Royal Brompton Hospital(RBH).I want to learn whether young people think the smart-inhaler has influenced how they manage their asthma and whether this process has affected their relationship with the healthcare provider who issued it. I am interested in the views of the caregivers of these young people . I hope to explore the views of the healthcare provides to see if they think that smart-inhalers impact on how young people manage their asthma and whether they think this process will affect their relationships with patients.
I aim to conduct 12 semi-structured interviews with young people who have been given a smart-inhaler at their last clinic visit ,and 12 caregivers of these young people. interviews will be carried out when they return the smart-inhaler (6-12 weeks after the original appointment). interviews will be carried out in private, at the hospital and will be audio recorded and typed for analysis. Healthcare provides will be invited to focus group to discuss their experiences of using smart-inhalers. All responses will be analysed to see if any common themes emerge.
Participants will be recruited from RBH. A member of the RBH paediatric asthma team will ask the young person/caregiver if they would be happy to be contacted by an independent researcher at the time they are issued the smart-inhaler.REC name
