  • Research summary

Title: What are the experiences of women receiving psychological therapy for postnatal depression in Primary Care Psychology Services?
Postnatal depression affects around one in ten new mothers and can affect the wellbeing of both the mother and her baby. Current psychological therapies have reported variable effectiveness in this area. A greater understanding of women’s perceptions of psychological therapy would contribute information important for the development of more effective interventions in future. The current study aims to explore women's views of psychological therapy for postnatal depression, including what they find helpful and what encourages their attendance. Views on whether parenting support would be found helpful will also be explored. These aims will be achieved by interviewing women who have received therapy at an NHS Primary Care Psychology Service. These interviews will last approximately one hour and approximately 20 women will be recruited to take part. Additionally, a focus group will be conducted with staff members at one of the collaborating Services to explore their views on delivering interventions to complement the women's views. The data gathered through these interviews and focus group will be transcribed and analysed to generate themes representing the women’s views and beliefs. The results of this research will inform the development of future interventions for postnatal depression.
