Research summary
This study explores people's personal experience of bipolar disorder moods, in all its complexity and phases over time, and examines how they influence significant aspects of a person's life. To gain a better understanding of how people manage the challenges of bipolar disorder over time, this study will investigate the lived experience of individuals during different mood states. It will, therefore, examine people's experiences during episodes of mania, depression and more stable periods. This research is concerned, in particular, with how individuals think and feel about themselves, other people and their environment during different mood states and the changing meaning of these relationships over time. An important part of this endeavour is to access how individuals feel during distinct mood states and how they recognise these feelings. To better understand how people perceive important environments during different states, this study will also focus on inpatients' experiences of being in a hospital psychiatric ward during a bipolar episode.
