Research summary
Nursing roles are evolving, with nurses increasingly undertaking responsibilities traditionally carried out by Doctors. One area of practice in which the nurse’s role has become more advanced is in IBD with the development of nurse led clinics (Keefe, 2008). From the literature accessed it is evident that nationally, the value of specialist nursing posts within the IBD speciality, in caring for patients with long term conditions is well recognised (Royal college of Nursing, 2010), identifying an enormous contribution to the patient experience.
There have been improvements in the delivery of IBD services since the original Quality Care: Service Standards for the Healthcare of People with IBD was produced in 2009. Over the last decade research has suggested patient perspectives on care in the UK showed variations in patient’s experience of services and standards of care across hospitals, describing variations in clinical quality of services not meeting clinical guidelines. Therefore, the study will focus on the experience of patients attending an IBD nurse led clinic, with particular interest in the patient experience, opinions, feelings and their views.
The research question aims to explore the experience and views of patients attend the IBD nurse led clinic, to determine whether the service meets the required needs of patients diagnosed with Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis and to inform and make recommendations for future service development. The detailed objectives are as follows
• To explore and examine the experience of the patient attending the IBD nurse led clinic from the perspective of its users.
• To explore how the IBD nurse led clinic contributes towards enhancing quality of life of its users, and seeks to identify specific areas that benefits from the service.
• To identify areas of development in the IBD service from the perspective of its users.
• To develop recommendations to inform and improve the delivery of the IBD nurse led clinic within the NHS Health Board but also in a wider context.REC name
