Research summary
Prostate cancer (PC) affects 1 in 8 men in the UK, and obesity around 1 in 3. Obesity is associated with higher risk of aggressive PC, reduced therapeutic response and increased spread. The prostate is surrounded by fat, which has different secretions in obese vs lean PC patients. One of those secretions is called an exosome, which contains small parts of genetic information and is involved in cell to cell communication.
This study looks at collecting prostate and adipose tissue from routine NHS radical prostatectomies and prostate biopsies for laboratory analysis as part of a MD/PhD programme. We would like to collect paired patient research samples alongside a patient questionnaire to link imaging and genomics with demographics between obese and lean prostate cancer patients.
