Research summary
Chemotherapy is widely used to treat a variety of cancers but it is also associated with significant complications and even death. Usually doctors make a clinical assessment on patient fitness based on information about the patient’s health using a scale such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) performance status. Fitter patients usually cope with chemotherapy better and have better results from their treatment.
Within the surgical setting, fitness is usually measured using specialised breathing and exercise methods. In particular, the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) has shown to be better than clinical assessment alone. We want to investigate whether patients with pancreatic cancer shown to be fitter in these exercise tests have a higher chance of survival when undergoing chemotherapy. 100 patients with pancreatic cancer who are due to have chemotherapy treatment will be recruited over approximately 18 months, and will be followed up for survival data. We expect each patient to be in the study for approximately 6 months. Participants will undergo a cardiopulmonary exercise test and will then be treated as per standard of care in their usual hospital.REC name
