Research summary
Children and adolescents with type I diabetes (T1D) are recommended to undertake 30-60 min of moderate intensity exercise on a daily basis to help control their blood sugar and reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. However, as only ~ 25% of children with T1D meets this recommendation there is a need to consider alternative approaches to exercise in this population. This project will therefore examine whether a single bout of time efficient, high-intensity exercise results in better blood sugar control over a 48 hour period compared to a 30 minute bout of moderate intensity exercise. This research will in turn provide health care professionals with a better understanding of the optimum dose of exercise to improve blood sugar control in children and adolescents with T1D.
